Sources & Methodology

How Chinese Naming Lab separates naming judgment, public data, examples and service scope.

What is a service judgment?

Naming work can involve linguistic and cultural judgment: whether a combination sounds natural, what style it suggests, whether a homophone is likely to matter, and how a name fits the use described by the client. Those judgments are context-dependent and should be explained rather than presented as universal facts.

What we treat as data

When we describe a name, surname or character as officially popular, we identify the underlying report and year. We do not relabel old national rankings as current-year statistics.

Primary population source used on this site

2021 National Name Report — Household Registration Research Center, Ministry of Public Security, published January 24, 2022. Government-hosted copy: Hunan Public Security Department mirror.

Examples are not client results

Names shown in guides or layout examples illustrate structure and style. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, they are not testimonials, paid-client outcomes, national rankings, legal approvals or universal recommendations.

Tradition and cultural context

Chinese naming traditions can include family customs, literary references, preferred characters and symbolic associations. On this site, those are treated as cultural context for creative naming. We do not present a name as a guarantee of future events or personal outcomes.

Commercial scope boundaries

Business naming and linguistic screening do not guarantee trademark availability, company-name registration, domain availability or legal clearance. Those checks belong to the relevant professional or authority in the target market.
